MVP™ FAQ

Here is a list of some frequently asked questions regarding the Moving Vessel Profiler:
  1. Where can you position the MVP on the vessel?
  2. Can the MVP be used on the stern of a vessel while towing other devices?
  3. Is the Multi-Sensor Fish available for use with all the MVP systems?
Where can you position the MVP on the vessel?
The MVP system can be deployed for stern or side deployments. We recommend a side deployment since it makes recovery easier. When deployed, the MVP’s fish is very stable; the fish and cable essentially stay in a “plane of operation” that is approximately 1 meter wide which allows for safe side deployments. (Refer to this image.) If you have a concern, send us a deck layout and we will review it for you. If a side mount is selected, then a guy wire (stay) will need to be installed to take the side loads during deployment.

Can the MVP be used on the stern of a vessel while towing other devices?
Yes. We have had clients deploy the MVP’s fish, towed air gun, hydrophone eel and Huntec towed acoustic fish (four (4) systems in total!) from the stern of their vessel during a survey. Click to enlargeThe MVP’s fish is very stable when deployed; the fish and cable essentially stay in a “plane of operation” that is approximately 1 meter wide. The depth and length of this plane are determined by the scope of the cable and the ship speed. (Refer to this image.) In general, the rule of thumb is to separate the MVP from other towed systems as much as possible. The photo to the left shows a multi-towbody configuration. Provided the “other” towed systems are stable in the water, there should not be a problem. The illustration at the right shows how the two towed bodies stay in their own plane of operation.

Is the Multi-Sensor Fish available for use with all the MVP systems?
To date, we have deployed the multi-sensor free-fall fish (MSFFF) on MVP100, MVP200, MVP300 and MVP800 systems. The Multi-Sensor Fish is too large to be deployed from the MVP30. Please refer to this illustration for a comparison of the various fish models and the systems they can be used with.
