MBARI LARS

- Dorado AUV Launch and Recovery System

The MBARI AUV LARS was developed by ODIM Brooke Ocean for the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), for use with their Dorado AUV. The system is designed for installation on the MBARI research vessel Zephyr.

The system can lift 2500 lbs and accommodate 21” diameter cylindrical AUVs up to 20 ft. long.

The system consists of a unique two-stage A-frame that is used to overboard the capture mechanism. The two-stage J-frame allows 135 degrees of rotation, without excessively long hydraulic cylinders.

The capture mechanism contains a winch that hoists the lifting slings (three for larger vehicles, two for smaller vehicles). Using remote line attachment methods to attach a towline to the vehicle, the vehicle is drawn into the lifting slings, which are attached to compliant target hoses. This presents a compliant target zone to the vehicle.

The LARS is designed to operate in sea state 3-4 conditions.

The MBARI LARS underwent successful sea trials in April of 2003 and is now in full operation.
