ORCA Handling System
- Shipboard Launch and Recovery System
The ORCA Handling System was developed for the launch and recovery of the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office' ORCA semi-submersible from the T-AGS 60 survey vessels.
In this photo, ORCA is being launched from an underway T-AGS 60 vessel. The handling system utilizes a single-point lift, a capture saddle and a towline to stabilize ORCA as it is raised and lowered. The key technology is patented line-attachment methods which allow the towline and lifting cable to be attached without the need to have a person in the water.
All system components, except for the two cranes and the ORCA, are designed to be broken down and stored in a standard 20 ft. ISO container.Successful sea trials for the system were carried out during the spring of 1996.
