BOT PRESS RELEASE: MARCH 04, 2003UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT COLLECTS SECOND DATA SET WITH SEAHORSE™ MOORED OCEAN PROFILER Brooke Ocean Technology Limited has recently delivered a SeaHorse™ Profiler to the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Connecticut in Groton, Connecticut.   The SeaHorse delivered to UConn has a maximum deployment depth of 200 metres and was equipped with the standard complement of sensors including the Sea-Bird 19plus CTD and a Sea-Bird Dissolved Oxygen sensor. Dr. Dan Codiga is a physical oceanographer at the University and has had two successful deployments with his first SeaHorse profiler. The SeaHorse was deployed from the R/V Connecticut. It collected a CTD/DO profile every 60 minutes for 7 weeks on each deployment.
Dr. Codiga has since ordered a second SeaHorse profiler, identical to the first, scheduled to ship in time for a spring deployment. “The ability to collect full vertical profiles frequently enough to resolve tidal fluctuations, and to do so unattended for up to a few months duration even in the presence of strong tidal currents, is unique.”- Dr. Dan Codiga, UConn

SeaHorse is a self-contained profiling system that moves up and down a mooring wire, powered by the energy of surface waves. The use of wave energy allows long term deployments without the need for large amounts of battery power. Because SeaHorse can profile vertically through the water column on a regular basis, it eliminates the requirement for multiple sensors on the mooring.
